Man Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Sliema

Sliema’s usually bustling streets were a stark contrast to the tension that unfolded last night as a man was arrested and remanded in custody over an alleged violent sexual assault on his former partner. The incident, which took place in a third-floor apartment on Tower Road, has left the close-knit community shaken.

Arrest and Remand

The 35-year-old man, a local resident, was apprehended by police following a call from the victim. He was subsequently charged with grievous bodily harm and sexual assault. Magistrate Dr. Charmaine Galea remanded him in custody, citing the gravity of the allegations and the risk of him interfering with the investigation.

The man, who has been living in Sliema for over a decade, is known to the community, with neighbors expressing shock at the allegations. “He always seemed like a normal guy,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re all in disbelief.”

Support for the Victim

The victim, a 32-year-old woman, is receiving medical treatment and psychological support. Local NGOs, including the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector and the Richmond Foundation, have reached out to offer their assistance. The Sliema Local Council has also expressed its solidarity with the victim.

Daphne Caruana Galizia Way, the main thoroughfare in Sliema, was the scene of a small protest last night, with residents holding candles and placards in support of the victim. “We’re here to show our support and to send a clear message that violence against women won’t be tolerated in our community,” said one of the protesters.

Investigation Underway

Police investigations are ongoing, with officers collecting CCTV footage from nearby buildings and interviewing potential witnesses. Inspector Keith Mercieca, leading the investigation, urged anyone with information to come forward.

“We appeal to anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area of Tower Road last night to contact us,” he said. “Your information could be crucial to our investigation.”
