Marsa’s Duck Dilemma: Council Appeals for Rehoming

Quacking Crisis in Marsa: Council Pleads for Ducks’ New Homes

In the heart of Marsa, where the Mediterranean’s waves lap against the shore, a unique problem has arisen. The local council is appealing for help, not for humans or infrastructure, but for the feathered residents of the Marsaxlokk Road pond. Several ducks have perished, and the council fears more will follow if nothing changes.

Ducks in Distress

Marsa’s pond, a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, has become a haven for ducks over the years. However, the council has noticed a worrying trend. Several ducks have died, and the surviving ones seem stressed and malnourished. The council, in a desperate bid to save these birds, has turned to the public for help.

“We’ve seen an increase in the duck population over the years, which is great, but we’re struggling to keep up with their needs,” said Joe Xuereb, Marsa Council’s Environment Officer. “We need to rehome some of these ducks to ensure their survival and the health of the pond.”

Rehoming: A Lifeline for the Ducks

The council is urging residents and businesses to consider rehoming some of the ducks. They’ve set up a hotline and an email address for those interested. “We’re looking for people who have a safe, open space, preferably with a small body of water,” Xuereb explained. “We’ll provide guidance on how to care for the ducks and ensure a smooth transition.”

Businesses are also encouraged to participate. “We’ve had interest from a few restaurants and hotels,” Xuereb said. “They can provide a larger space and, of course, plenty of food for the ducks.”

Community Response

The appeal has sparked a heartwarming response from the Marsa community. “I’ve already put in a call to the council,” said Maria Attard, a long-time Marsa resident. “I’ve got a small pond in my backyard. It’s not much, but I hope it can make a difference.”

Local businesses have also stepped up. “We’re looking into creating a small sanctuary for the ducks behind our restaurant,” said Anthony Zammit, owner of ‘Il-Baħar’ restaurant. “We want to do our part to help these beautiful creatures.”

Xuereb is optimistic about the response. “We’ve had a great turnout so far. With the community’s help, we can ensure these ducks have a happy, healthy home.”
