Marsascala Man: “I Don’t Know Who Shot Me”
In the quiet, coastal town of Marsascala, a man lies in hospital, grappling with the unthinkable – he was shot, and he doesn’t know who pulled the trigger. The attempted murder of 35-year-old Mario Camilleri on Triq il-Kappillan Azzopardi has left the close-knit community shaken and the police scrambling for answers.
Gunshot in the Night
It was around 10 pm on a Tuesday when Mario Camilleri was walking home from a nearby bar. Suddenly, a car pulled up, and a gunshot rang out, striking Mario in the stomach. He collapsed, bleeding, onto the pavement. Neighbors rushed out, and an ambulance was called. Mario was rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where he remains in stable condition, his life forever changed.
“I remember the car, the shot, the pain,” Mario recalls, his voice barely above a whisper. “But the person who pulled the trigger? I can’t say. It all happened so fast.”
Community in Shock
Marsascala, known for its fishing boats and traditional ‘tallinja’ houses, is no stranger to crime. But an attempted murder? That’s a different story. Residents are left wondering how such an act could happen in their peaceful town.
“This is not the Marsascala we know,” says long-time resident Maria Grech, shaking her head. “We’re a close community. We look out for each other. This… this is something else.”
Police Investigation
The Malta Police Force has launched a full investigation into the attempted murder. They’re treating it as an isolated incident, but that’s little comfort to Mario and his family.
“We’re doing everything we can to find out who’s responsible,” says Inspector Joseph Muscat, leading the investigation. “We’re appealing to anyone who might have seen something that night to come forward. Even the smallest detail could help.”
Mario, for his part, is trying to stay strong. “I just want to know who did this,” he says, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination. “I need to know why.”
As Marsascala waits for answers, one thing is clear: this quiet town will never forget the night a gunshot shattered its peace.
