Marsascala Shooting: Victim Can’t ID Attacker

Marsascala Shooting Survivor: “I Don’t Know Who Shot Me”

In the quiet, coastal town of Marsascala, a man lies in hospital, grappling with the unthinkable – he was shot, and he has no idea who pulled the trigger. The attempted murder of 35-year-old Matthew Camilleri has left the close-knit community shaken and the police scrambling for answers.

Gunshots Echo Through Marsascala

On the evening of Saturday, March 12, Marsascala was filled with the usual weekend buzz. The seafront was alive with families enjoying the mild weather, while the local pizzerias and bars were doing a brisk trade. Suddenly, around 9 pm, the tranquility was shattered by gunshots. Matthew Camilleri, a local man, was left fighting for his life, with bullet wounds to his abdomen and leg.

The incident occurred near the popular Il-Kanċunċijat Garden, a spot known for its stunning views of St. Thomas Bay. Witnesses reported seeing a man fleeing the scene, but the attacker’s identity remains elusive. “I heard the shots and saw a man running away,” said a nearby resident who wished to remain anonymous. “It was like something out of a movie, happening right here in our peaceful town.”

Matthew: “I Don’t Remember Much”

Matthew Camilleri is now recovering in Mater Dei Hospital. Speaking to Hot Malta from his hospital bed, he was candid about his confusion. “I don’t remember much,” he said, his voice weak but determined. “I was walking home, and then… nothing. I woke up here, with these tubes and bandages. I have no idea who shot me.”

Matthew’s family has been by his side since the incident. His mother, Maria, spoke of her son’s resilience. “He’s strong. He’s a fighter. But we’re all terrified. We just want to know why this happened.”

Police: No Motive Yet

The police have launched a full investigation, treating the case as attempted murder. So far, no motive has been established, and no arrests have been made. Superintendent Keith Mercieca, leading the investigation, appealed for witnesses to come forward. “We need information from the public,” he said. “Any detail, no matter how small, could be crucial.”

Marsascala’s mayor, Mario Fava, has condemned the attack. “This is not the Marsascala we know and love. We are a peaceful community, and we will not let this act of violence define us. We stand with Matthew and his family, and we urge anyone with information to help the police.”

As Matthew Camilleri continues his recovery, the people of Marsascala wait for answers. The usually serene town is left with a chilling question: who shot Matthew, and why?
