Naxxar Collapse Fears: Shifting Foundations Spark Panic

Naxxar’s Nightmare: Shifting Foundations Spark Collapse Fears

In the quiet, residential street of Triq San Gorg Preca, Naxxar, a chilling sight has been unfolding. The foundations of a newly constructed block of apartments have begun to shift, raising alarming fears of collapse and sending shockwaves through the close-knit community.

Cracks in the Facade

Residents first noticed the ominous signs a few weeks ago. Cracks snaked their way up the walls, windows refused to close properly, and the once-straight walls now leaned at a worrying angle. Panic spread like wildfire, and the local council was swift to react, evacuating the building and cordoning off the area.

Engineers have been flocking to the site, their faces grave as they examine the damage. “It’s not looking good,” one of them muttered to a reporter, asking not to be named. “The foundations have shifted, and that’s a serious red flag.”

Faulty Foundations: A Growing Concern

This is not an isolated incident. Across Malta, there have been several cases of buildings sinking or leaning due to faulty foundations. In 2019, a block of apartments in Birkirkara had to be evacuated after it started tilting like a drunken sailor. In 2021, a house in Żebbuġ collapsed during heavy rain, a stark reminder of the dangers of poor construction.

Experts warn that Malta’s unique geological makeup, with its soft, clay-like soil, makes it particularly vulnerable to foundation issues. Add to that the pressure of rapid urban development, and it’s a recipe for disaster.

Who’s to Blame?

Fingers are pointing in several directions. Some blame the developers, accusing them of cutting corners to save money. Others point to the Planning Authority, questioning whether they’re doing enough to enforce building regulations. The government, meanwhile, is promising tougher penalties for developers who flout the rules.

“We’re leaving no stone unturned in our investigation,” a spokesperson for the Planning Authority told Hot Malta. “If we find any negligence, we will not hesitate to take action.”

Meanwhile, the residents of Triq San Gorg Preca are left in limbo, their lives upended by the shifting foundations. They’re staying with friends and family, their homes reduced to a scene of chaos, and their futures uncertain.

“We just want to go home,” says Maria, a retired nurse who’s been living in the apartment block for over a decade. “But now, we’re scared. Scared that our home might collapse, and scared that it might not, and we’re left with nothing.”

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: Malta needs to do more to protect its residents from the dangers of faulty foundations. That means stricter enforcement of building regulations, better education for developers and builders, and more investment in geological surveys.

As for the residents of Triq San Gorg Preca, they’re hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. They’re keeping each other strong, supporting each other through the uncertainty. Because that’s what communities do. They stand together, even when the ground beneath them shifts.
