It’s not every day you see a five-storey building swaying like a palm tree in the breeze. Yet, that’s exactly what residents of Naxxar woke up to last week. The newly constructed ‘Naxxar Heights’ has started to lean, its foundations shifting like sand on a beach. The sight has through the quiet Maltese town, leaving residents fearful and authorities scrambling for answers.
From Pride to Panic: Naxxar’s Changing Skyline
Naxxar Heights was meant to be a symbol of progress, a testament to Malta’s growing construction boom. Standing tall at 20 metres, it was set to be one of the town’s most prominent landmarks. But now, it’s become a symbol of something else entirely – fear. The building, located on Triq San Gorg Preca, has started to lean alarmingly, with cracks appearing in its walls. Neighbours have reported seeing the structure move, a sight that’s left them terrified.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” says Maria Attard, a Naxxar resident who lives across the street. “One morning, I woke up and the building seemed… off. It was leaning, and there were cracks in the walls. I’ve been living here for 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Race Against Time: Investigations and Evacuations
The Maltese construction authority has been swift in its response, evacuating the building and launching an investigation. Engineers have been on-site daily, drilling into the foundations and taking samples. Preliminary reports suggest that the foundations may have been compromised, possibly due to inadequate soil compaction or water ingress.
Meanwhile, residents have been left in limbo. “We’ve been told it could be weeks before we know what’s happening,” says Joe Borg, another Naxxar resident. “We’re just waiting, hoping that our homes are safe.”
The incident has raised serious questions about construction standards in Malta. While the island has seen a construction boom in recent years, there have been concerns about the quality of some of the work. This incident, however, is on a whole different scale.

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear – this could have been much worse. Had the building collapsed, the consequences could have been catastrophic. It’s a stark reminder of the importance of strong construction standards and rigorous enforcement.
“We need to learn from this,” says Dr. Joseph Farrugia, a local architect. “We need to ensure that our construction standards are of the highest quality. Our lives depend on it, quite literally.”
As for Naxxar Heights, its future hangs in the balance. Engineers are working tirelessly to stabilise the building, but it’s too early to say what will happen. One thing is certain, though – the once-proud building has become a stark reminder of the importance of safety in construction.
“We just want to go home,” says Maria Attard, her voice filled with a mix of fear and determination. “We want to know that our homes are safe. That our town is safe.”
