New Animal Rehoming Centre Planned for Qormi

Paws for Thought: New Animal Rehoming Centre on the Cards for Malta

Imagine this: a sprawling, green oasis in the heart of Malta, where the barks of joy and the purrs of contentment fill the air. This isn’t a dream, but a reality that could soon be ours. The Malta Animal Welfare NGO has announced plans for a new animal rehoming centre in Qormi, set to transform the lives of countless creatures and their future families.

From Neglect to New Beginnings

Malta’s animal welfare scene has long been crying out for a dedicated rehoming centre. Currently, many animals are housed in cramped, temporary facilities, waiting for their forever homes. The new centre, planned for a 1,500 sq.m site in Qormi, promises a breath of fresh air – and space – for these furry, feathered, and scaled friends.

“The centre will provide a safe, comfortable, and spacious environment for animals awaiting adoption,” explains Dr. Antonella Gauci, President of Malta Animal Welfare. “It will also serve as an educational hub, teaching the public about responsible pet ownership and animal welfare.”

More Than Just a Shelter

The new centre isn’t just about providing a temporary home for animals. It’s about giving them a chance to be themselves, to play, to socialise, and to heal. The plans include separate areas for dogs, cats, and other small animals, each designed to mimic their natural environments. There will be spaces for exercise, play, and interaction, as well as medical facilities for treatment and rehabilitation.

But the centre’s impact won’t stop at its walls. It’s set to become a hub for community engagement, hosting events, workshops, and even school visits. “We want to create a space where people can connect with animals, learn about them, and understand the importance of animal welfare,” says Dr. Gauci.

Making It Happen

The project is still in its early stages, with plans for the centre’s design and layout currently underway. The Malta Animal Welfare NGO is working tirelessly to secure funding, with the aim of breaking ground on the site in late 2023.

But they can’t do it alone. The NGO is calling on the public to support the project, through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word. “This centre is for everyone who cares about animals,” says Dr. Gauci. “It’s a chance to make a real difference in the lives of countless creatures.”

So, what do you say, Malta? Are you ready to give our animals a pawsitive future?
