NGOs Slam Sliema Lido Reclamation Plans

NGOs: Sliema Lido Reclamation ‘A Disaster in the Making’

Imagine standing on Sliema’s bustling promenade, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sea in hues of orange and pink. Now, picture that view marred by a wall of concrete, the result of a controversial land reclamation project. This is the dystopian future that several environmental NGOs are warning against, as they slam the proposed Sliema lido land reclamation plans.

Reclamation: A Sea of Controversy

The plans, submitted by the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA), propose reclaiming around 30,000 square meters of sea to create a new lido and beach area. While the MTA argues that this will boost tourism and create new jobs, environmental groups are up in arms, labeling the project ‘pure madness’.

“This is not just about losing a chunk of our coastline,” says Mark Mallia, spokesperson for BirdLife Malta. “It’s about the cumulative impact on our already strained marine ecosystem.”

Ecosystem Under Threat

The proposed site is home to a thriving marine ecosystem, including endangered species like the Loggerhead Turtle. The NGOs warn that the construction work and increased human activity could spell disaster for these creatures.

“We’re talking about the loss of critical habitats, increased pollution, and the potential extinction of local species,” explains Miriam Dalli, a marine biologist and environmental activist. “It’s a short-sighted plan that prioritizes immediate gains over long-term sustainability.”

Alternatives and Next Steps

NGOs are pushing for alternative solutions, such as regenerating existing beaches and promoting sustainable tourism. They’re also calling for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment (EIA) before any work begins.

“We’re not against development, but it must be responsible and sustainable,” says Alexandra Montebello, campaign coordinator at Din l-Art Ħelwa. “We urge the MTA to reconsider this plan and engage in meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders.”

The MTA has maintained that the project will go ahead, pending approval from the Planning Authority. However, with public opinion firmly against the plans, all eyes are on the upcoming public consultation and the final decision.

As Malta grapples with this contentious issue, one thing is clear: the future of Sliema’s coastline hangs in the balance, and with it, the health of our marine ecosystem.
