Drug Bust in Sliema: Man Accused of Possession, Trafficking

In the heart of Malta’s bustling Sliema, a quiet Tuesday morning was shattered by the echo of police sirens. A man, now identified as 35-year-old Joseph Camilleri, was arrested in a dramatic drug bust at his apartment in Tower Road. The seizure, one of the largest in recent years, has through the usually tranquil neighborhood.

The Seizure

According to sources close to the investigation, police raided Camilleri’s apartment around 7 am. They found him in possession of a substantial amount of cannabis, cocaine, and ecstasy, along with packaging materials and a set of scales. The total estimated street value of the drugs is believed to be around €50,000.

“It was like something out of a movie,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “Police were everywhere, and they carried out bag after bag of evidence.”

Accusations and Denial

Camilleri was taken into custody and later charged with possession of drugs with intent to supply and trafficking. He has denied the charges, claiming the drugs belong to someone else. His lawyer, Michael Scicluna, stated, “My client maintains his innocence. We are preparing a strong defense and will be challenging the prosecution’s evidence.”

This is not Camilleri’s first brush with the law. Court records show previous convictions for minor drug offenses, but this is his most serious charge to date.

Community Reaction

The news of the bust has sparked a mix of reactions in Sliema. While some residents are relieved that the police have taken action, others are concerned about the increasing drug problem in Malta.

“We’ve always known there’s a drug issue in Malta, but it’s scary when it happens right on your doorstep,” said another neighbor. “I hope this serves as a warning to others.”

Malta’s Minister for Home Affairs, National Security, and Law Enforcement, Byron Camilleri (no relation to the accused), echoed these sentiments. “This seizure sends a clear message to anyone involved in drug trafficking. We will not tolerate this behavior, and we will continue to crack down on those who engage in it.”

In the meantime, the investigation continues. Police are appealing to anyone with information about the case to come forward.
