Sliema Lido Reclamation: NGOs Sound Alarm

NGOs: Sliema Lido Reclamation ‘A Disaster in the Making’

Imagine strolling along Sliema’s bustling seafront, the Mediterranean’s turquoise waters lapping gently against the promenade. Now picture that scene replaced by a concrete jungle, the sea pushed back by land reclamation. This isn’t a dystopian fantasy, but a very real possibility if recent plans are approved. Local NGOs are up in arms, calling the project ‘pure madness’.

What’s on the Table?

The proposed project, spearheaded by the Malta Developers Association, aims to reclaim land from the sea to build luxury apartments and a marina in Sliema. The plans, submitted to the Planning Authority, would see the lido area extended by around 100,000 square metres, pushing the sea back towards Tigné Point.

But it’s not just about losing beach space. Environmentalists warn of the potential ecological disaster. The lido area is home to a unique ecosystem, with Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds providing habitat for numerous species, including the endangered loggerhead sea turtle.

NGOs Sound the Alarm

NGOs like BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa, and the St. Julian’s Local Council have united in their opposition to the plans. They argue that the project would cause irreparable damage to the environment, destroy public spaces, and exacerbate traffic congestion in an already overcrowded area.

“This is not development, it’s destruction,” says Mark Mallia, Chairperson of Din l-Art Ħelwa. “Sliema is not a blank canvas for developers to paint their profits on. It’s a living, breathing community with a unique character that must be protected.”

Local Residents Weigh In

Residents of Sliema and nearby areas have also been vocal in their opposition. Many fear that the project will only add to the area’s already severe traffic problems and change the character of their community forever.

“Sliema is already struggling with too many cars and not enough parking,” says Joseph Xuereb, a Sliema resident. “This project will only make things worse. And for what? A few more luxury apartments for wealthy foreigners?”

Others worry about the impact on local businesses. “Tourists come to Sliema for the sea and the sun,” says Maria Attard, who runs a café near the lido. “If they take that away, what will we have left?”

What’s Next?

The Planning Authority is expected to make a decision on the project in the coming months. Meanwhile, NGOs and local residents are gearing up for a fight, determined to protect Sliema’s coastline and its unique character.

“We won’t stand by and watch as our heritage is sold off to the highest bidder,” says Mallia. “We’ll be making our voices heard, loud and clear, until this madness is stopped in its tracks.”

So, what do you think, Hot Malta readers? Should Sliema’s lido make way for luxury apartments and a marina? Or is this a step too far? Let us know in the comments.
