St Julian’s Restaurant Fire Causes Traffic Chaos

Flames and Fumes: St Julian’s Restaurant Fire Snarls Traffic

As the sun began to set over Spinola Bay, the tranquility of St Julian’s was shattered by an unexpected inferno. Around 7:30 PM on Tuesday, a fire broke out at the popular restaurant, ‘Il-Majjistral’, causing chaos on the bustling streets and disrupting traffic flow.

Blaze Engulfs Popular Eatery

Witnesses reported seeing thick black smoke billowing from the restaurant, located on the corner of Triq il-Mediterran and Triq San Giljan. The fire, which started in the kitchen, quickly spread, engulfing the entire building. “It was like a scene from a movie,” said Maria, a local resident who was walking her dog nearby. “The flames were huge, and the smoke was everywhere.”

Fire services were promptly alerted and arrived at the scene within minutes. They battled the blaze for hours, ensuring it didn’t spread to nearby buildings. The fire was eventually brought under control around midnight, leaving ‘Il-Majjistral’ severely damaged.

Traffic Chaos in St Julian’s

The fire not only caused concern among residents and diners but also led to significant traffic disruptions. Triq il-Mediterran, a major thoroughfare, was closed to traffic, diverting vehicles onto already congested side streets. Commuters heading home from work found themselves stuck in long queues, with some reporting journeys taking twice as long as usual.

Bus services were also affected, with several routes diverted or delayed. Malta Public Transport issued a statement advising passengers to expect delays and to check their website for updates.

No Injuries Reported, but Business Impacted

Fortunately, no injuries were reported. All patrons and staff were evacuated safely, thanks to the quick response of the restaurant’s management and the fire services. However, the fire has left ‘Il-Majjistral’ closed indefinitely, with the owner, Tony Borg, expressing his concern about the future of his business.

“This is a devastating blow,” Borg said. “We’ve been here for over a decade, and we’re a part of the community. We’ll do our best to rebuild, but it’s going to be a long road.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest it may have been an accident, possibly related to kitchen equipment.

As St Julian’s begins to pick up the pieces, one thing is clear: the community will rally around ‘Il-Majjistral’ and help it rise from the ashes. As Maria put it, “It’s more than just a restaurant. It’s a part of St Julian’s, and we won’t let it stay closed for long.”
