Fondazzjoni Sebħ Opens Doors to Youth Leaving Care
Fondazzjoni Sebħ: A New Home for Youth Leaving Care
Imagine, if you will, the bustling streets of Msida. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow over the Grand Harbour. Among the passersby is a young person, carrying a heavy backpack, not just with their belongings, but with the weight of uncertainty. They’ve aged out of care, and the world ahead is daunting. But today, there’s a new light at the end of their tunnel – Fondazzjoni Sebħ’s first transitional residence.
From Concept to Reality
Fondazzjoni Sebħ, a local NGO dedicated to supporting vulnerable youth, has turned a vision into a tangible reality. After years of planning and fundraising, their first transitional residence for youth leaving care opened its doors last month. Located in the heart of Msida, the residence offers a safe haven for young people as they navigate the challenging transition into independent living.
The residence, a once-abandoned building, has been transformed into a vibrant, welcoming space. It’s a testament to Fondazzjoni Sebħ’s commitment to providing more than just a roof – it’s a community where young people can grow, learn, and thrive.
More Than a Place to Stay
This isn’t just a place to stay; it’s a springboard to independence. The residence offers more than just accommodation. It provides life skills training, educational support, and mentoring. It’s a place where young people can learn to cook, manage their finances, and even grow their own food in the rooftop garden.
“We want to equip our young people with the tools they need to succeed,” says Fondazzjoni Sebħ’s director, Maria Grech. “It’s not just about providing a bed for the night. It’s about giving them the skills and support they need to build a future.”
Opening Doors, Changing Lives
The residence is already making a difference. Since opening its doors, it has welcomed its first residents. Their faces light up as they talk about their new home. They speak of a sense of belonging, of hope, and of a future that’s finally within reach.
But Fondazzjoni Sebħ’s work doesn’t stop at the residence’s doors. They’re already , planning to expand their services, and advocating for policy changes to better support youth leaving care.
“This is just the beginning,” says Grech. “We’ve opened one door, but there are many more to open. We won’t stop until every young person in Malta has the chance to build a bright future.”
