Fondazzjoni Sebħ Opens First Transitional Residence for Youth Leaving Care
Fondazzjoni Sebħ: A New Home for Youth Leaving Care
Imagine, for a moment, the daunting task of stepping out into the world, independent and alone, at just 18. Now, imagine you’ve spent most of your life in care. This is the reality for many young people in Malta. But now, there’s a new beacon of hope in Birkirkara. Fondazzjoni Sebħ has opened its first transitional residence, a safe haven for youth leaving care.
More Than a Roof: A Transitional Home
Tucked away in a quiet street off Triq San Gorg Preca, the residence is more than just a roof over their heads. It’s a stepping stone, a place where young adults can learn to of independent living. “We want to empower these young people,” explains Maria, the residence’s coordinator. “We’re here to guide them, not to do everything for them.”
The residence, a beautifully restored 19th-century house, can accommodate up to six young adults at a time. Each has their own room, but they share common spaces – a kitchen, a living room, a backyard. It’s designed to mimic the real world, to prepare them for life after care.
Services Beyond Shelter
Fondazzjoni Sebħ offers more than just a place to stay. The organisation provides comprehensive support services, including life skills training, educational and vocational guidance, and mental health support. They also help with practical matters like job hunting, budgeting, and even learning to cook.
“We believe in a broad approach,” says Maria. “These young people have been through a lot. They need more than just a place to live. They need support, guidance, and a sense of community.”
Community Engagement
The residence isn’t just a home; it’s a community hub. Fondazzjoni Sebħ encourages volunteers and mentors from the local community to get involved. They host workshops, social events, and even family-style dinners. The aim is to foster a sense of belonging, to show these young people that they’re not alone.
“We want to change the narrative around youth leaving care,” says Maria. “We want people to see that with the right support, these young people can thrive. They can contribute to our society in meaningful ways.”
And the impact is already being felt. Since opening its doors, the residence has welcomed its first residents. They’re young people with big dreams and even bigger challenges. But with Fondazzjoni Sebħ by their side, they’re ready to face the world.
As we stand on the cusp of a new year, let’s make a resolution to support our youth leaving care. Let’s ensure that every young person in Malta has a safe place to call home, a community to call their own, and a future to look forward to.
