Former Chamber President Warns: ‘Beware of Big Promises’

Former Chamber President: ‘Beware of Big Promises’

Standing on the bustling Republic Street in Valletta, one could easily be swayed by the grand promises echoing from political posters and billboards. But according to a former President of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, not all promises are created equal. In an exclusive interview, Joe Tanti warned, “Be wary of those who promise a lot. It’s not about the size of the promise, but the feasibility and the plan behind it.”

From the Chamber to the Street

Tanti, who served as Chamber President from 2016 to 2018, has seen his fair share of promises. From economic growth targets to infrastructure projects, he’s seen them all. Now, he’s using his experience to caution the public. “I’m not saying don’t dream big,” he clarifies, “but make sure those dreams are grounded in reality.”

Promises and the Public Purse

Tanti’s concern is not just about unmet expectations, but also about the financial implications. “Promises cost money,” he says, “and if they’re not realistic, they can lead to financial strain.” He points to the recent debate around the Three Cities project, where cost overruns and delays have raised eyebrows. “It’s not about whether the project is good or bad,” he explains, “it’s about whether the promises made about it were realistic.”

Promises and the Political Cycle

Tanti also warns about the political cycle and the temptation to make big promises. “Elections are often won on promises,” he says, “but they should be won on plans.” He believes that politicians should focus more on achievable goals and less on grand, often unfulfillable, pledges. “It’s about setting expectations right,” he says, “and that starts with being honest about what can realistically be achieved.”

Tanti’s advice is timely, as Malta gears up for its next general election. With promises already starting to fill the air, his warning serves as a reminder to be discerning. “Don’t be swayed by the biggest promise,” he advises, “look for the most realistic one. Because that’s the one that’s most likely to be kept.”

As the sun sets over the Grandmaster’s Palace, casting a warm glow over Republic Street, Tanti’s words ring true. In the land of promises, it’s the realistic ones that matter most.
