Islamic Solidarity Withdraws Luqa Mosque Plan

Mosque Plans Shelved: Islamic Solidarity Retreats from Luqa

In a surprising turn of events, the Islamic Solidarity Foundation has withdrawn its application to build a mosque in Luqa, a move that has left the local community and stakeholders alike taken aback. The proposed site, a plot of land on Triq l-Imqabba, had been the subject of heated debate for months, with opinions divided among Luqa’s residents.

From Controversy to Compromise

The mosque’s withdrawal comes amidst a backdrop of intense public scrutiny and dialogue. The application, submitted in late 2021, sparked a flurry of discussions, with some residents expressing support for the project, while others raised concerns about traffic congestion, parking issues, and the potential impact on the area’s character.

In response to the outcry, the Islamic Solidarity Foundation engaged in open dialogue with the local council and residents. “We understood that the proposed location was not ideal,” said Dr. Mohammed El-Sayed, the foundation’s spokesperson. “We respect the community’s concerns and felt it was in everyone’s best interest to withdraw the application.”

: A New Search for a Suitable Site

The withdrawal of the Luqa mosque application does not mean the end of the Islamic Solidarity Foundation’s plans to establish a place of worship in the area. Instead, they have vowed to continue their search for a more suitable location, one that addresses the community’s concerns and maintains the harmony of the neighborhood.

Dr. El-Sayed hinted at potential alternative sites, stating, “We are currently exploring other options within the Southern Harbour region. Our aim is to find a location that serves the needs of the Muslim community while also respecting and integrating with the local environment.”

Meanwhile, Luqa Local Council has welcomed the foundation’s decision. Mayor Mario Fenech expressed his gratitude, saying, “We appreciate the Islamic Solidarity Foundation’s willingness to engage in dialogue and their decision to withdraw the application. We look forward to continuing this open communication as they search for a new site.”
