Malta’s Mafia Gets a Female Twist in New Novel

Malta’s Own Mafia Story Gets a Female Twist

Imagine this: the cobbled streets of Valletta, the sun dipping below the Grand Master’s Palace, and a woman, not a man, pulling the strings of Malta’s underworld. This is not a scene from a movie, but the premise of a new novel by local author, Maria Azzopardi, set to redefine the mafia narrative.

From the Shadows to the Spotlight

For decades, the mafia story has been dominated by male protagonists, from ‘The Godfather’ to ‘Goodfellas’. But Azzopardi, a seasoned journalist and crime fiction enthusiast from Msida, is set to change that with her upcoming novel, ‘The Godmother’.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the power dynamics in the criminal underworld,” says Azzopardi. “But I wanted to explore a different perspective, one that’s often overlooked – that of the women.”

Malta’s Mafia: A Real-Life Inspiration

While ‘The Godmother’ is a work of fiction, it draws inspiration from real-life events and figures in Malta’s criminal history. Azzopardi, who has covered the local crime beat for years, has a wealth of knowledge to draw from.

“Malta’s mafia might not be as notorious as the Sicilian or American ones, but it’s no less complex or dangerous,” she says. “And like any good crime story, it’s filled with power struggles, betrayals, and unexpected alliances.”

A New Voice for Malta’s Crime Fiction

‘The Godmother’ is not just a new take on the mafia story; it’s also a significant addition to Malta’s crime fiction scene. While local authors like Manuel Delia and Walid Nabhan have made waves in political thrillers and historical fiction, the crime genre remains largely unexplored.

“Malta has a rich history of crime and corruption, yet we’ve barely scratched the surface in our literature,” says Azzopardi. “I hope ‘The Godmother’ will inspire more local authors to explore this genre.”

The novel, set to be published later this year by Merlin Publishers, is already generating buzz among local bookworms. And with its unique perspective and real-life inspiration, it promises to be a gripping read for both Maltese and international audiences.

“Malta’s mafia story is not just about men in suits and dark alleys,” says Azzopardi. “It’s about power, ambition, and the lengths people will go to achieve them. And in ‘The Godmother’, we finally get to see that story told from a woman’s point of view.”
