Malta’s New Voting Arrangements: Patients & Elderly Care Residents Can Now Vote Easily
Voting Made Easy: Hospital Patients & Elderly Care Residents Get Special Arrangements
Imagine being confined to a hospital bed or a care home, eager to cast your vote but unable to leave. This was the reality for many Maltese voters in the past. But not anymore. The Electoral Commission has announced special voting arrangements for patients and elderly care residents, ensuring no one is left behind in this democratic process.
Understanding the New Voting Arrangements
The Electoral Commission has introduced mobile voting units (MVUs) and home voting for those who can’t make it to the polling station. This initiative aims to increase voter turnout and make the voting process more accessible. Here’s how it works:
- Mobile Voting Units (MVUs): These will be set up at various hospitals and elderly care homes across Malta. Patients and residents can vote at these units, supervised by electoral officials.
- Home Voting: Those who are unable to leave their residence can request a home visit from electoral officials. They will bring the necessary materials for voting directly to the voter’s bedside.
Local Voting Stations: Where & When
Here are some of the local hospitals and elderly care homes that will host Mobile Voting Units:
- Mater Dei Hospital, Msida – Voting from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Election Day
- St. Luke’s Hospital, Guardamangia – Voting from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Election Day
- Elderly Care Home, St. Paul’s Bay – Voting from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Election Day
- Elderly Care Home, Żurrieq – Voting from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM on Election Day
To request home voting, voters can contact the Electoral Commission’s helpline on 153 or email them at info@electoral.gov.mt.
Making Every Vote Count
These new voting arrangements are a significant step towards ensuring that every Maltese citizen can exercise their democratic right, regardless of their circumstances. It’s a reminder that every vote matters, and every voice should be heard.
As we approach Election Day, let’s ensure that no one is left behind. If you know someone who might benefit from these special arrangements, spread the word. Together, we can make this election truly inclusive.
As Dr. Joe Gerada, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, puts it, “Voting is not just a right, it’s a responsibility. We want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to fulfill this responsibility.”
