Man Attacked with Metal Bar: Former Housemate Charged

Metal Bar Attack: Former Housemate’s Tale of Survival

In the quiet residential street of Triq il-Kbira, Birkirkara, an early morning altercation turned violent last week, leaving a man nursing severe injuries and another facing serious charges. The victim, a 35-year-old local man, was allegedly attacked with a metal bar by his former housemate, a 32-year-old Maltese national.

From Housemates to Adversaries

The two men, who had once shared a house in Msida, found themselves on opposite sides of a legal battle after a disagreement escalated into a physical altercation. According to the victim, the accused had been harassing him for weeks, culminating in the brutal attack that left him with multiple injuries, including a broken rib and severe lacerations.

“I never thought it would come to this,” the victim told Hot Malta, his voice still trembling with fear and disbelief. “We used to be friends, roommates even. But things changed, and I guess he didn’t take our separation well.”

Neighbors in Shock

The incident, which occurred around 7 am on a Tuesday, through the usually peaceful neighborhood. Neighbors, who had rushed to the victim’s aid, described the scene as “horrifying” and “something out of a movie.”

“I heard screams and went out to see what was happening,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous. “I saw [the victim] on the ground, bleeding, and [the accused] standing over him with a metal bar. I shouted for help, and thankfully, others came out and managed to stop him.”

Arrest and Charges

The accused was arrested at the scene and later charged with grievous bodily harm and criminal damage. He was remanded in custody pending further investigations and a bail hearing. If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison.

“We’re taking this case very seriously,” a spokesperson for the Malta Police Force told Hot Malta. “We’re grateful to the neighbors who intervened and helped apprehend the suspect. We urge anyone with information about such incidents to come forward.”

The victim, who has since been discharged from Mater Dei Hospital, is now staying with relatives and receiving support from local counseling services. He expressed gratitude towards the community and the police for their swift response and support.

“I just want to put this behind me and move on,” he said. “I hope that justice will be served, and that no one else has to go through what I’ve been through.”
