Man Charged After Metal Bar Attack in Birkirkara
Metal Bar Assault: Man Charged After Former Housemate Attack
In the quiet residential street of Triq San Ġorġ, Birkirkara, an early morning incident on Tuesday left a man nursing injuries and another facing serious charges. The victim, a 35-year-old Maltese man, was allegedly attacked with a metal bar by his former housemate, a 32-year-old man from Msida.
Attack and Arrest
Neighbours reported hearing a commotion around 6:30 AM. They found the victim bleeding from head wounds in front of his house. The suspect was apprehended a short distance away, still holding the alleged weapon. Police from Birkirkara station swiftly responded and took control of the situation.
“I woke up to shouting and then a loud thud,” said a neighbour who wished to remain anonymous. “I looked out and saw the poor man on the ground, bleeding. It was shocking.”
Motive and Background
Preliminary investigations suggest a long-standing dispute between the two men, who had lived together until recently. Sources close to the situation hint at disagreements over rent and living arrangements. However, the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Both men are known to the police, with the suspect having previous convictions for drug-related offenses. The victim, on the other hand, is a local teacher with no criminal record.
Community Reaction and Support
The incident has left the usually peaceful Birkirkara community shaken. Residents have expressed concern and offered support to the victim. “This could happen to anyone,” said another neighbour. “We need to look out for each other.”
Local councillor, Joseph Muscat, has condemned the attack, stating, “Such acts of violence have no place in our community. We must stand together against this kind of behaviour.”
The victim has been treated and discharged from Mater Dei Hospital. He is expected to make a full recovery.
