Man Remanded After Alleged Sexual Assault on Former Partner in Birkirkara
In the quiet, residential street of Triq il-Kbira in Birkirkara, a man was arrested this week following an alleged violent sexual assault on his former partner. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning, has through the usually peaceful community, leaving neighbours stunned and residents calling for stricter measures against domestic violence.
The Incident
The victim, a 32-year-old woman, was reportedly attacked by her former partner, a 35-year-old man, outside her home. Neighbours, who heard her cries for help, rushed out and managed to scare off the suspect. The woman was then rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, where she was treated for her injuries and later discharged.
The man was subsequently arrested and remanded in custody by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech on Thursday. The court extended his custody for a further seven days, pending further investigations.
Community Reaction
News of the incident has sparked outrage among Birkirkara residents. “We’re shocked that something like this could happen here,” said Maria, a long-time resident who wished to remain anonymous. “We need to do more to protect women and make sure they feel safe in their own homes.”
Local councillor, Joseph Muscat, echoed these sentiments. “We’re working closely with the police to ensure the safety of our community. We’re also encouraging anyone who’s a victim of domestic violence to come forward and seek help,” he said.
