Man Remanded as Police Unravel Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Msida

In the quiet, residential street of Triq San Pawl in Msida, a chilling allegation has emerged, sending shockwaves through the close-knit community. A man, identified by sources as 35-year-old Joseph Xuereb, has been remanded in custody following an alleged violent sexual assault on his former partner.

The Incident and Arrest

According to court documents, the alleged incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, 13th February, at Xuereb’s apartment on Triq San Pawl. The victim, a 32-year-old woman, was reportedly assaulted and sexually violated, leaving her with severe injuries. Neighbours, who prefer to remain anonymous, reported hearing screams and a commotion around 9 pm.

When police arrived, they found the woman distraught and injured. Xuereb was arrested at the scene and later charged with rape and causing actual bodily harm. He was remanded in custody by Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech, who described the alleged crime as “heinous” and a “violation of the most intimate and personal space of the victim.”

The Victim’s Journey and Support

The victim was immediately taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged and is receiving support from the Victim Support Malta organisation. The NGO’s spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Hot Malta, “We are providing her with emotional and practical support, ensuring she has access to all the services she needs during this difficult time.”

Local councillor, Michael Falzon, has also expressed his support, stating, “Msida is a tight-knit community, and we stand united with the victim. We condemn this alleged act of violence in the strongest terms and urge anyone with information to come forward.”

The Investigation and Next Steps

Inspector Keith Mercieca, leading the investigation, has appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. “We are treating this case with the utmost seriousness and are leaving no stone unturned in our investigation,” he said.

The case will proceed to the courts, with the next hearing scheduled for 24th March. Xuereb, who has pleaded not guilty, will remain in custody until then.

Hot Malta will continue to follow this story as it unfolds, providing updates and support to the local community.
