Man Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Birkirkara

In the heart of Birkirkara, a bustling town known for its vibrant markets and historic churches, a grim shadow has fallen. A man, identified by sources as 35-year-old Joseph Xuereb, was remanded in custody on Tuesday, accused of a violent sexual assault on his former partner.

The Incident

The alleged assault took place in the early hours of Sunday morning at the couple’s former residence on Triq il-Kbira, a narrow street lined with traditional Maltese balconies. Neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, reported hearing screams and a commotion around 2 AM. “It was terrifying,” one resident said, “We’ve never experienced anything like this here.”

The victim, a 28-year-old woman, was reportedly found by police with visible injuries and taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. She has since been discharged and is receiving support from the police’s Family Protection Unit.

The Arrest and Remand

Xuereb was arrested on Monday following an investigation led by Inspector Keith Micallef from the Birkirkara Police Station. He was subsequently charged with rape, causing actual bodily harm, and criminal damage. Magistrate Dr. Donatella Frendo Dimech remanded him in custody on Tuesday, citing the gravity of the allegations and the risk of reoffending.

Xuereb, who has no previous convictions, did not enter a plea and will next appear in court on the 21st of April. His legal aid lawyer, Marco Galea, declined to comment on the case.

Support and Awareness

Local NGOs, such as Konthu and Shelter Malta, have expressed their support for the victim and urged anyone experiencing domestic violence to reach out. “We must continue to raise awareness about the prevalence of violence against women in our communities,” said a spokesperson for Shelter Malta.

“This is not just an issue for the victim and the perpetrator,” said Inspector Micallef, “It’s a community issue. We encourage anyone with information or concerns to come forward.”
