Man Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Sliema

Sliema’s usually bustling streets fell silent yesterday as news spread of a man’s arrest following an alleged violent sexual assault on his former partner. The incident, which reportedly took place in a second-floor apartment on Tower Road, has left the close-knit community shaken.

Arrest and Remand

Police arrested the 35-year-old man on Tuesday evening following a tip-off from concerned neighbors who heard screams and a commotion coming from the apartment. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, a 32-year-old woman, distressed and injured. The man was subsequently taken into custody and later remanded in custody by Magistrate Dr. Charmaine Galea after being charged with violent sexual assault.

The court was told that the man, a local resident, had allegedly forced his way into the woman’s apartment and assaulted her, causing injuries that required medical attention. The woman, who has since been discharged from Mater Dei Hospital, is said to be traumatized and receiving support from her family and friends.

Community Response and Support

News of the incident has sparked outrage among Sliema residents, with many taking to social media to express their shock and disgust. “This is not the Sliema we know and love,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We’re a close community, and we’ll stand by this woman and her family through this terrible time.”

The Sliema Local Council has also issued a statement condemning the alleged assault and offering its support to the victim. “We are appalled by this alleged act of violence,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with the victim and her family, and we urge anyone with information to come forward and help bring the perpetrator to justice.”

Local NGOs working to support victims of sexual violence have also offered their services to the woman and her family. “We want her to know that she is not alone,” said a spokesperson for one such organization. “We are here to support her in any way we can, whether that’s through counseling, legal advice, or just a listening ear.”

Investigation Ongoing

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing, with officers appealing for anyone with information to come forward. “We urge anyone who may have heard or seen anything suspicious in the Tower Road area on Tuesday evening to get in touch,” said a police spokesperson. “Your information could be vital in helping us bring this man to justice.”

The man is due back in court on Friday, where he will enter a plea. In the meantime, the community of Sliema stands united in its support for the victim and its condemnation of the alleged crime.
