Man Remanded Over Violent Sexual Assault in Sliema

Sliema, once known for its bustling nightlife and vibrant streets, now finds itself at the heart of a disturbing allegation. A man, let’s call him Joseph, has been remanded in custody following an alleged violent sexual assault on his former partner. The incident, which reportedly occurred in a second-floor apartment on Tower Road, has through the usually lively neighbourhood.

The victim, a woman in her late twenties, reported the incident to the police on Tuesday. According to her statement, the assault took place on Sunday evening, leaving her with severe injuries. Neighbours, who heard her cries for help, rushed to her aid and called the police. Joseph was arrested at the scene and later charged with rape and causing actual bodily harm.

Superintendent of Police, Mario Fava, confirmed the arrest, stating, “We take all allegations of sexual assault seriously. Our thoughts are with the victim, and we assure her and the public that we are doing everything in our power to ensure justice is served.”

The news of the alleged assault has sparked outrage among Sliema residents. Many have taken to social media to express their shock and solidarity with the victim. “This is not the Sliema we know and love,” said one resident, who wished to remain anonymous. “We need to stand together against violence, especially against women.”

Local councillor, Dr. Roselyn Borg, echoed these sentiments, “We condemn any form of violence, especially violence against women. We are offering our full support to the victim and her family during this difficult time.” The Sliema Local Council has also organised a candlelight vigil for this Friday evening at the Sliema Promenade, inviting the community to show their support.

Joseph was remanded in custody by Magistrate Dr. Charmaine Galea, who also issued a protection order for the victim. The case will proceed to court on the 15th of next month. The victim, who is currently receiving medical treatment, has been offered psychological support by the police and social workers.

DPP Dr. Martha Mifsud emphasized the importance of the legal process, “We must let the law take its course. We urge anyone with information about this case to come forward and help us ensure justice is served.”
