Man Remanded Over Violent Sliema Sexual Assault
Man Remanded in Custody Over Alleged Violent Sexual Assault in Sliema
In the heart of Malta’s bustling Sliema, a man was remanded in custody on Tuesday, accused of a violent sexual assault on his former partner. The chilling incident, which allegedly occurred in the quiet residential area of Tower Road, has through the usually peaceful community.
Allegations of a Violent Attack
The 36-year-old man, a local resident, was arrested on Monday following a complaint from his 32-year-old former partner. She alleges that he forced his way into her apartment and subjected her to a brutal sexual assault, leaving her with severe injuries. Neighbours, who heard her cries for help, rushed to her aid and alerted the police.
Inspector Keith Mercieca, prosecuting, told the court that the woman had been in a relationship with the accused for five years before they separated last year. Despite the split, the man continued to harass and threaten her, according to the prosecution.
Court Hearing and Remand
The accused was brought before Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech at the end of a long day in court. Dressed in a grey tracksuit, he listened intently as the prosecution outlined the case against him. Lawyer Edward Gatt, appearing for the accused, requested bail, arguing that his client was a first-time offender with no criminal record.
However, the prosecution opposed bail, citing the gravity of the charges and the risk of the accused repeating the offence. The magistrate agreed, remanding the man in custody pending further investigations. The court also imposed a protection order, banning the accused from approaching or communicating with the victim.
Speaking outside the court, the victim’s lawyer, Marion Camilleri, praised her client’s courage in coming forward. “She has shown immense bravery in reporting this crime and testifying in court. We hope that today’s decision sends a strong message that violence against women will not be tolerated,” she said.
Community Reaction and Support
News of the alleged assault has sparked outrage in the Sliema community. Residents have taken to social media to express their shock and solidarity with the victim. “This is not the Sliema we know and love,” said one resident. “We stand with the victim and hope that justice is served.”
The Women’s Rights Foundation has also weighed in, condemning the alleged attack and offering support to the victim. “We urge anyone who has experienced sexual violence to come forward and seek help. You are not alone,” the organisation said in a statement.
As the investigation continues, the victim and her family can take comfort in knowing that their community stands with them. The alleged perpetrator will remain in custody, with his next court appearance scheduled for the end of the month. The court will also consider whether to issue a warrant of arrest for the accused, should he fail to appear.
“Today is a step in the right direction,” said the victim’s lawyer. “But our fight for justice is far from over. We will continue to support her every step of the way.”
