Naxxar’s Noise Nightmare: Residents’ Years-Long Battle Against Unheeded Construction Woes
Imagine waking up every morning to the cacophony of heavy machinery, the relentless hum of power tools, and the thunderous clatter of falling debris. This is not the soundtrack of a war zone, but the daily reality for residents of Naxxar’s Triq il-Kunċizzjoni, where a construction site has been a neighbour from hell for years.
Years of Noise Pollution
Locals have been living with this construction-induced din since 2015. The site, intended for a block of apartments, has seen fits and starts of activity, but the noise and dust have been constant companions. “It’s like living next to an airport,” complains Joe Xuereb, a long-time resident. “We’ve tried everything – letters, emails, phone calls, even personal visits to the authority’s offices. But it’s like shouting into the void.”
Joe is not alone. A quick stroll down Triq il-Kunċizzjoni reveals a street lined with silent, shuttered homes. Many residents have moved out, unable to bear the noise pollution any longer. Those who remain are a resilient bunch, but even their patience has worn thin. “We’ve had enough,” says Maria Camilleri, another long-time resident. “We just want to live in peace.”
Authority’s Response: A Mixed Bag
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has been the primary point of contact for the frustrated residents. While some officials have been sympathetic, others have been less than helpful. “We’ve been given the runaround,” says Joe. “One official told us that the noise is ‘within acceptable limits’. Acceptable for whom, I’d like to know!”
MEPA has issued several enforcement notices to the construction company, but the noise continues unabated. The authority’s spokesperson told Hot Malta, “We are aware of the issue and are doing our utmost to resolve it. However, these things take time.” Time, however, is a luxury the residents of Triq il-Kunċizzjoni can ill afford.
Legal Action: A Last Resort
With no end in sight to their noise nightmare, some residents are considering taking legal action. “We’ve been let down by the authorities,” says Maria. “Now, we’re left with no choice but to take matters into our own hands.” A class-action lawsuit could be on the cards, with residents hoping to force the construction company to adhere to noise limits and, perhaps, even secure compensation for the years of disruption.
Meanwhile, life in Triq il-Kunċizzjoni continues to a backdrop of relentless construction noise. The residents, however, remain undeterred. “We won’t give up,” says Joe. “We deserve to live in peace, and we won’t stop fighting until we get it.”
