Naxxar Residents Return Home After Collapse Scare

Naxxar Residents Breathe Sigh of Relief as Homes Deemed Safe

In the quaint Maltese town of Naxxar, the sound of hammers and drills has replaced the usual hum of daily life. Residents, who were evacuated just over a week ago due to fears of building collapse, are finally being allowed to return home. The relief is palpable, not just for the 200 or so residents affected, but for the entire community that has rallied around them.

An Overnight Evacuation

It was around midnight on 12th March when the first cracks appeared in the walls of a block of apartments in Triq San Pawl, Naxxar. The noise woke up residents who immediately alerted the authorities. Within hours, around 200 people were evacuated, their homes suddenly deemed unsafe. They were temporarily housed in hotels, the Red Cross providing immediate support.

Inspections and Repairs

In the days that followed, engineers and architects swarmed the affected buildings, conducting thorough inspections. The cause of the cracks was identified as subsidence, a gradual settling or sinking of the soil. Repairs have been underway, with the local council working tirelessly to ensure the safety of the residents. “We’ve been working round the clock,” said Naxxar Mayor, Doris Abela, “Our priority is to get these families back into their homes as soon as possible.”

Residents have been keeping a close eye on the progress, their anxiety palpable. “It’s been a stressful week,” said Mario, a long-time Naxxar resident. “But we’re grateful for the support we’ve received. The community has really come together.”

Returning Home

Today, residents started to return to their homes. They were greeted by a sense of normalcy, the streets filled with familiar faces. The relief was evident, but so was the determination to rebuild and move forward. “We’re just happy to be back,” said Maria, another resident. “We’ve got a lot of cleaning up to do, but we’re home.”

For the local council, the work is far from over. They are committed to ensuring that this doesn’t happen again. “We’re looking into ways to prevent this in the future,” said Mayor Abela. “We’re also working on providing support to those affected, to help them get back on their feet.”

As the sun sets over Naxxar tonight, there’s a sense of relief and resilience. The town has weathered a storm, and it’s ready to rebuild. The sound of hammers and drills may still echo through the streets, but it’s a sound of progress, of moving forward.
