Naxxar Residents’ Warnings on Construction Site Fall on Deaf Ears

For years, residents of Naxxar have been sounding the alarm about a construction site in their quiet town. But their concerns, it seems, have been falling on deaf ears.

Years of Neglect

Tucked away in Triq il-Kappella, a narrow street off Naxxar’s main square, lies the controversial construction site. It’s been there for over a decade, with little progress made despite the passage of time. Residents have watched in frustration as the site has become an eyesore, a breeding ground for pests, and a safety hazard.

“It’s like living next to a dump,” complains Maria, a long-time resident who asked to be identified only by her first name. “The place is always full of rubble, and there are rats and cockroaches everywhere. It’s disgusting.”

Warnings Ignored

Residents have been vocal about their discontent, repeatedly contacting the local council and the Planning Authority. They’ve sent letters, made phone calls, and even held meetings, but their efforts have yielded little result.

“We’ve been warning them about the safety risks,” says Joe, another resident. “Kids play in this area, and there are always loose materials lying around. It’s only a matter of time before someone gets hurt.”

Residents also point to the environmental impact of the site. “It’s right next to a protected area,” says Maria. “We’re worried about the damage it’s doing to the ecosystem. But no one seems to care.”

Authority Response

When contacted, the Planning Authority acknowledged receiving complaints about the site. They attributed the lack of progress to a series of legal battles and changes in ownership.

“We understand the residents’ frustration,” says a spokesperson. “We’re doing our best to resolve the issue as soon as possible.” But for residents like Maria and Joe, the response feels like too little, too late.

“We’ve been hearing the same thing for years,” says Joe. “We just want this site cleaned up and finished, one way or another.”

As the site remains untouched, residents are left wondering what it will take to finally get their message across. They’re hoping that with increased public pressure, something will finally change.

This is a developing story. Hot Malta will continue to follow up on this issue and provide updates as they become available.
