Naxxar Residents’ Warnings on Construction Site Ignored
Naxxar Residents’ Warnings on Construction Site Fall on Deaf Ears
Imagine standing at the corner of Triq San Pawl and Triq l-Imqabba in Naxxar, looking at the towering construction site that’s been a fixture of the skyline for what feels like an eternity. Now, imagine hearing that residents have been warning authorities about this very site for years, with little to no action taken. This is the reality facing Naxxar residents, who feel their concerns have been ignored.
Years of Complaints, No Action
According to long-time Naxxar resident, Maria Grech, the construction site at the heart of this story has been a source of frustration for years. “I’ve been living here since the 80s, and I’ve never seen a construction site this big, this close to residential areas,” she says. Maria, along with many of her neighbours, has been vocal about their concerns, but they feel their voices have fallen on deaf ears.
Complaints range from the obvious – noise and dust pollution – to the more concerning, like the potential impact on the local water table and the lack of proper traffic management. Yet, despite these worries being raised time and time again, residents feel that little has changed.
Authority Response: A Mixed Bag
When approached for comment, the Planning Authority (PA) acknowledged receiving complaints about the site. They confirmed that they had carried out inspections and taken enforcement action where necessary. However, residents like Maria argue that these actions are too little, too late. “They come and inspect, they fine the developers a small amount, but the problem persists,” she says.
The PA also pointed out that the project has all the necessary permits, having been approved in 2014. But for residents, this doesn’t address their concerns about the scale of the project and its impact on their quality of life.
Political Promises and Community Action
Local politicians have been quick to condemn the situation, with Naxxar Mayor, Doris Abela, promising to push for stricter enforcement. “We understand the residents’ frustration,” she says. “We’re doing our best to ensure their voices are heard and that the developers adhere to the rules.”
But for some residents, these promises ring hollow. They’re taking matters into their own hands, forming a committee to lobby for stricter regulations and better enforcement. “We can’t just sit back and accept this,” says committee spokesperson, Joseph Xuereb. “We’re fighting for our right to a peaceful, healthy life.”
As the construction site continues to grow, so too does the frustration of Naxxar residents. They’re left wondering why their warnings have gone unheeded for so long, and what it will take to finally see some change.
Joseph Xuereb sums it up best: “We’re not against development, but it has to be done responsibly, with respect for the community and the environment. That’s all we’re asking for.”
