Naxxar Residents: Years of Warnings on Construction Noise
Naxxar Residents: “We Warned Authorities, Now We’re Left in Dust and Noise”
NAXXAR, Malta — Imagine waking up every morning to the deafening roar of heavy machinery, the sight of towering cranes blocking your view, and the constant fear of falling debris. This is not a scene from a construction site, but the daily reality for residents of Triq il-Kbira in Naxxar, who have been living with a mammoth construction project right on their doorstep for years.
Years of Warnings, Years of Noise
Residents have been sounding the alarm about the construction site on Triq il-Kbira, also known as Naxxar Road, for what feels like an eternity. The site, earmarked for a massive residential and commercial development, has been a source of frustration, stress, and health concerns for the community. Yet, despite their repeated pleas, many feel their voices have fallen on deaf ears.
“We’ve been complaining since the first dig,” says Maria, a long-time resident who asked to be identified only by her first name. “The dust, the noise, the constant vibration in our homes — it’s like living in a war zone.”
Authority Response: A Mixed Bag
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) granted a permit for the project in 2015, but residents argue that the scale and impact of the development were not adequately considered. They point to the lack of a proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and the absence of adequate mitigation measures to protect residents from the construction’s effects.
MEPA, however, maintains that it has been addressing residents’ concerns. “We have been monitoring the situation and have taken enforcement action when necessary,” a spokesperson told Hot Malta. “We encourage residents to continue reporting any issues to us.”
Meanwhile, the local council has been trying to mediate between residents and the developer. “We understand the residents’ concerns and have been working with both parties to find a solution,” says a council spokesperson. “However, our hands are tied by the existing permit.”
Health Concerns and Quality of Life
The constant noise and dust from the construction site have taken a toll on the health and well-being of residents. Dr. Joseph Mizzi, a local GP, confirms that he has seen an increase in patients complaining of stress, anxiety, and respiratory issues related to the construction. “The noise levels are often above what is considered safe, and the dust is a constant irritant,” he says.
the construction has led to traffic congestion and parking issues, further exacerbating the quality of life for residents. “We can’t even enjoy our balconies or open our windows anymore,” laments Maria. “It’s like we’re prisoners in our own homes.”
: Resilience and Hope
Despite their frustrations, residents remain resilient. They have formed a committee to represent their interests and have been actively engaging with authorities and the developer. “We’re not giving up,” says committee spokesperson, John Attard. “We’ll keep fighting until our voices are heard and our quality of life is restored.”
As for the developer, they maintain that they are committed to completing the project while minimizing disruption to residents. “We understand the concerns of the community and are working closely with them to address any issues,” says a spokesperson.
In the meantime, residents continue to live with the noise, dust, and uncertainty. But they remain hopeful that their persistent efforts will eventually bear fruit. As Maria puts it, “We just want our peace and quiet back. Is that too much to ask?”
