Driving along Triq San Pawl in Naxxar, you can’t miss the towering cranes and the hum of activity. The once-quiet rural scene is now a bustling construction site, with a massive development underway. But not everyone is celebrating this urban transformation. Environmental group Momentum is raising alarm bells, urging an investigation into the project amid fears of structural instability.

From Countryside to Concrete Jungle

At the heart of the controversy is the ‘Naxxar Heights’ project, a sprawling development by local construction giant GSD. The project, sprawling over 100,000 square meters, includes luxury apartments, retail spaces, and a five-star hotel. But the scale and speed of the development have raised eyebrows, and not just among environmentalists.

Residents have reported cracks appearing in their homes, and fears are growing that the development could be causing structural issues. Momentum, in a strongly-worded statement, has called for an immediate investigation, accusing the Planning Authority of rubber-stamping the project without adequate scrutiny.

Momentum’s Call to Action

Momentum is not just crying wolf. The group has presented evidence, including geological surveys and structural engineering reports, suggesting that the development is being built on unstable ground. They argue that the Planning Authority has ignored these warnings, prioritizing development over safety.

“We’re not against development,” says Mark Mallia, spokesperson for Momentum. “But it must be sustainable, safe, and respectful of the environment. Naxxar Heights is none of these things.”

The Planning Authority’s Response

The Planning Authority, however, maintains that the project has been thoroughly vetted and meets all safety standards. In a statement, they dismissed Momentum’s claims as “scaremongering” and “without foundation”.

But with each passing day, the cracks in the walls of Naxxar’s homes seem to grow a little wider. And the questions raised by Momentum remain unanswered. Is Naxxar Heights a symbol of Malta’s urban progress, or a ticking time bomb?
