PL pledges car grants of up to €12,000 for families with more than three kids

Big Boost for Big Families: PL’s €12,000 Car Grant Promise

Imagine this: You’re a parent of four, living in Birkirkara, struggling to fit everyone into your aging car. You’ve been thinking about an upgrade, but the cost has been holding you back. Suddenly, you hear about a €12,000 grant for families like yours. That’s exactly what the Partit Laburista (PL) has promised, aiming to make life a little easier for Malta’s larger families.

The Nitty-Gritty of the Grant

The PL’s proposal, announced recently, is simple yet significant. Families with three or more children will be eligible for a grant of up to €12,000 towards the purchase of a new car. The grant will be means-tested, ensuring that those who need it most will benefit. The party has also promised that the grant will be available immediately if they win the next election.

“We understand the challenges faced by large families,” said PL leader Robert Abela. “This grant is about more than just a car. It’s about giving these families a helping hand, a chance to breathe a little easier.”

A Boost for the Auto Industry?

But it’s not just families who stand to gain. The auto industry could see a boost too. Dealerships across Malta, from those in Msida to those in Żabbar, could see an increase in sales. “This is a win-win,” said Joe Borg, owner of Borg Cars in Ħamrun. “It helps families, and it helps us. It’s a smart move by the PL.”

However, some industry experts have raised concerns about potential supply chain issues and the impact on used car prices. “We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out,” said one industry insider, speaking on condition of anonymity.

What About the Opposition?

The Partit Nazzjonalista (PN) has been quick to criticize the proposal, arguing that it’s more about politics than policy. “This is a desperate attempt to win votes,” said PN leader Bernard Grech. “We need sustainable solutions, not quick fixes.” The PN has yet to announce its own plans for supporting large families.

Meanwhile, the Malta Union of Teachers has called for more support for large families in education, while the Malta Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the proposal but called for more support for businesses too.
