PL Promises €12k Car Grants for Big Families
Big Boost for Big Families: PL’s €12,000 Car Grant Promise
Imagine this: a bustling street in Birkirkara, kids’ laughter echoing, and parents juggling car seats and strollers. Now, picture them driving home in a new car, courtesy of the government. That’s the promise of the Labour Party’s (PL) latest proposal – car grants of up to €12,000 for families with more than three children.
What’s the Plan?
The PL, if re-elected, pledges to introduce this scheme as part of their family-friendly policies. The grant will be means-tested, with families earning less than €30,000 a year eligible for the full €12,000. Those earning up to €50,000 will still receive a grant, though the amount will decrease on a sliding scale.
But here’s the catch – the car must be electric or hybrid. The PL argues this will encourage greener choices, aligning with Malta’s climate commitments. “We want to make it easier for families to go green,” said a PL spokesperson.
Local Impact: Birkirkara’s Family-Friendly Streets
Birkirkara, with its wide streets and family-centric atmosphere, stands to benefit. The town’s mayor, Alfred Bell, welcomed the proposal. “Anything that makes life easier for our families is a step in the right direction,” he said. He envisions streets filled with more electric cars, reducing noise and air pollution.
But not everyone’s convinced. Opposition MP and Birkirkara resident, Therese Comodini Cachia, raised concerns about the scheme’s affordability. “While the intention is good, we must ensure it’s sustainable and doesn’t burden taxpayers,” she said.
Practicalities and Timelines
The scheme, if approved, will roll out in 2023. Families will need to apply through the Transport Malta website. The grant will be paid directly to the dealership, with families choosing from a list of approved electric and hybrid models.
But what about those who prefer to keep their old car? The PL promises a separate scheme for car maintenance and upgrades, to keep older vehicles roadworthy and greener.
As Malta’s political scene heats up, this proposal adds fuel to the debate on family support and sustainability. With the election looming, one thing’s clear – the future of Malta’s families is very much on the table.
