PL’s €12,000 Car Grant Promise: A Game-Changer for Big Families?

Big Boost for Big Families: PL’s €12,000 Car Grant Promise

Imagine this: you’re a parent of four, five, or even more little ones, navigating the bustling streets of Malta’s towns. You’ve got school runs, grocery shopping, and family outings to manage. Now, picture having an extra €12,000 in your pocket to make life a little easier. That’s the promise from the Partit Laburista (PL) if they form the next government.

What’s the Deal?

The PL has pledged to introduce a car grant scheme for families with three or more children. The grant, which could reach up to €12,000, would be means-tested, ensuring it benefits those who need it most. The scheme is part of the party’s election manifesto, unveiled ahead of the upcoming general election.

“We understand the challenges families face, especially those with multiple children,” said PL leader Robert Abela. “A car can make a world of difference, helping with school runs, work commutes, and family outings. We want to make life a little easier for our families.”

How Will It Work?

The grant amount would vary depending on the family’s income. Those with the lowest incomes could receive the full €12,000, while those on higher incomes would receive a lower amount. The grant could be used to buy a new or used car, with the condition that it meets certain environmental standards.

PL spokesperson for family affairs, Clifton Grima, explained, “We want to encourage families to buy cars that are not only affordable but also kind to the environment. So, we’re looking at cars that are either electric or hybrid.”

What Do Locals Think?

We hit the streets of Malta to get a pulse on what locals think about this promise. Maria, a mother of four from Birkirkara, told us, “A car would make such a difference to our lives. I’d love to be able to drive the kids to school and not rely on buses all the time.”

However, not everyone is convinced. John, a father of two from Sliema, said, “I’m not sure if this is the best use of taxpayers’ money. I’d rather see the money spent on improving public transport.”

PL’s promise has certainly sparked a conversation among Malta’s families. if this becomes a reality, but one thing’s for sure, it’s a promise that’s got parents talking.
