Sliema’s Marian Procession: Thousands Gather in Devotion

Sliema’s Streets Echo with Devotion: Marian Gathering Draws Thousands

As the sun began to set over the Mediterranean on Sunday evening, the usually bustling streets of Sliema took on a different atmosphere. The hum of traffic and chatter of tourists gave way to the rhythmic cadence of prayers and hymns, as thousands gathered for the annual Marian procession.

Mary Immaculate Takes to the Streets

The procession, organised by the Sliema Parish, saw the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Mary Immaculate, carried through the heart of Sliema. The route began at the parish church, wound its way down Tower Road, and ended back at the church, a journey that has been repeated for over a century.

The statue, adorned with flowers and carried on a lavishly decorated float, was accompanied by a sea of faithful. Families, young and old, carried candles, their flickering lights illuminating the otherwise dimmed streets. The Sliema Band Club led the procession, their music filling the air, while parish priests walked alongside, leading the prayers.

Faith and Tradition in the Heart of Sliema

For many, the Marian procession is not just a religious event, but a cherished tradition that brings the community together. “It’s a beautiful sight to see,” said Maria, a Sliema resident who has been attending the procession since she was a child. “It’s about faith, yes, but it’s also about community. It’s a chance to see neighbours, to feel connected.”

Sliema’s shops and restaurants closed early to accommodate the procession, their owners and staff joining the crowd. Even the usually busy bus routes were rerouted, a sign of the respect and importance the procession holds in the community.

For tourists, the procession offered a unique insight into Maltese culture. “We’ve seen the churches and the history, but this… this is something else,” said John, a British tourist who happened upon the procession. “It’s so vibrant, so alive. It’s a side of Malta we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.”

: A Beacon of Faith and Unity

As the procession ended and the streets of Sliema returned to their usual rhythm, the echoes of prayer and hymn lingered. The Marian gathering, once again, served as a reminder of the deep-rooted faith and strong sense of community that defines Malta. As the parish priests led the final prayers, the crowd dispersed, their candles extinguished, but their spirits lifted, ready to face another week, united in faith and tradition.
