St Julian’s Restaurant Fire Causes Traffic Chaos
Flames and Fumes: St Julian’s Restaurant Blaze Snarls Traffic
It was just another bustling evening in St Julian’s, until the acrid smell of smoke began to permeate the air, and the orange glow of flames lit up the night sky. A fire at the popular restaurant, Il-Bistrot on Triq San Giljan, had broken out, sending plumes of smoke into the air and causing traffic chaos in the heart of Malta’s entertainment hub.
Firefighters Battle the Blaze
The Malta Fire Authority was quick to respond, with fire engines rushing to the scene from nearby stations. Firefighters battled the blaze for over two hours, eventually managing to contain and extinguish the fire. No serious injuries were reported, but the restaurant sustained significant damage.
“We received a call at around 8 pm,” said a MFPA spokesperson. “The fire started in the kitchen and quickly spread due to the grease and other flammable materials present. It was a challenging operation due to the busy location, but our teams worked swiftly and effectively.”
Traffic Gridlock in St Julian’s
The fire not only caused concern among diners and residents but also led to major traffic disruptions. Triq San Giljan was closed to traffic, leading to long queues and frustrated drivers. The police had to redirect traffic, causing congestion on nearby streets like Triq Għar id-Dud and Triq it-Turisti.
“I was stuck in traffic for over an hour,” said Malta resident, Maria Grech. “I couldn’t even see the fire from where I was, but the smoke was thick, and the smell of burning was everywhere.”
Business Impact and Support
The fire has left Il-Bistrot temporarily closed, with the owners assessing the damage and planning repairs. The restaurant is a beloved spot in St Julian’s, known for its Mediterranean cuisine and lively atmosphere. The owners have expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received from the community.
“We’re devastated by what’s happened, but we’re also grateful no one was hurt,” said the restaurant’s owner, Joe Borg. “We’ll rebuild and be back serving our customers soon. We’re thankful for the outpouring of support from the community.”
Other local businesses have also expressed solidarity, with some offering assistance and support to Il-Bistrot during this difficult time.
As St Julian’s returns to its usual bustle, the charred remains of Il-Bistrot serve as a reminder of the night’s events. The restaurant’s owners, however, are determined to rise from the ashes, with plans to reopen as soon as possible.
“We’re St Julian’s, and we’re resilient,” said Borg. “This setback won’t keep us down for long.”
