Teen’s Face Slashed in Brawl: Witness Grilled

In the heart of Malta, the usually bustling Republic Street in Valletta fell silent last night as police cordoned off the area following a brutal brawl that left a 17-year-old with a deep slash across his face. The incident, which took place outside the historic City Gate, has left the community shaken and authorities scrambling for answers.

What Happened on Republic Street?

Eyewitnesses report a heated argument escalating into a full-blown fight between two groups of young men around 10 PM. The altercation, which lasted only minutes, ended with the teenager being rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, his face gashed open. The weapon used has not been identified, but sources close to the investigation suggest it could be a switchblade.

In the aftermath, police swiftly arrested three individuals, two of whom were released on police bail pending further investigations. The third, a 20-year-old man, remains in custody as the prime suspect. However, it’s the whereabouts of a fourth individual, a key witness, that has detectives scratching their heads.

Witness Questioned Over Brawl

The witness, a 19-year-old local resident, was initially cooperative but has since gone into hiding. Sources close to the investigation confirm that he was last seen near the Three Cities ferry terminal in Vittoriosa. His sudden disappearance has raised eyebrows, with some speculating that he may hold crucial information that could turn the case.

Superintendent Joseph Muscat, leading the investigation, urges the witness to come forward. “We understand that he may be scared, but his testimony could be vital in bringing the perpetrator to justice. We assure him of our full protection and support,” he says.

Meanwhile, the community has rallied around the victim, with a social media campaign launched under the hashtag #JusticeForDaniel. The teenager, who wishes to remain anonymous, has thanked the public for their support, saying, “I just want to get back to my normal life.”

Community Calls for Tougher Laws

The incident has sparked a heated debate about knife crime in Malta. Opposition MP Jason Azzopardi has called for tougher penalties, stating, “We need to send a clear message that carrying and using knives will not be tolerated.” Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri, however, has refuted claims of a knife crime epidemic, insisting that such incidents are isolated.

As the investigation continues, one thing is clear: the community is demanding justice. The question remains, however, whether the witness’s testimony will be the key to unlocking the truth behind the brutal attack on Republic Street.
