Valletta’s Historic Museums to Shine in Darkness on June 6

Imagine the grand doors of the National Museum of Archaeology creaking open, not to the bright Maltese sunshine, but to the soft glow of candlelight. This isn’t a scene from a period drama, but a reality that awaits visitors to the next edition of ‘Museums by Candlelight’ in Valletta on June 6.

Illuminating History

Organised by Heritage Malta, this annual event transforms the island’s capital into a city of flickering lights and whispered stories. For one night only, some of Valletta’s most iconic museums will throw open their doors after sunset, inviting the public to explore their exhibits under the warm glow of candles and torches.

Last year, thousands of locals and tourists alike wandered through the dimly lit halls of the National War Museum, the Palace Armoury, and the Grandmaster’s Palace, each venue offering a unique perspective on Malta’s rich history. This year promises to be no different, with more venues set to join the list.

Candlelit Tales

But ‘Museums by Candlelight’ is more than just a chance to see these historic buildings in a new light. It’s an opportunity to hear the stories behind the artifacts, told by the people who know them best – the museum guides. From tales of ancient civilizations to accounts of Malta’s role in World War II, each venue offers a unique narrative that brings history to life.

For instance, at the National Museum of Archaeology, visitors can learn about the Neolithic temple builders who once called Malta home. Meanwhile, at the National War Museum, they can hear firsthand accounts of the island’s role in the Great Siege of 1565 and the Second World War.

Practical Information

So, mark your calendars for June 6. The event will run from 7 pm to 10 pm, giving visitors plenty of time to explore the various venues at their own pace. Tickets are expected to go on sale soon, with Heritage Malta offering special family packages to encourage visitors to bring along their little ones.

Remember to dress comfortably and bring a torch for the darker parts of the museums. And if you’re planning on visiting multiple venues, consider wearing comfortable shoes – Valletta’s cobbled streets can be a challenge even in the daytime!

In the meantime, keep an eye on Heritage Malta’s website and social media channels for updates on which museums will be participating this year. Who knows, you might just discover a new favorite spot in the city.

As the sun sets on another Maltese day, we can’t help but look forward to the night when Valletta’s history comes alive, one candlelit step at a time.
