In the heart of Malta’s capital, the usually bustling Republic Street was suddenly filled with screams and the screech of tires as a car mounted the pavement, sending pedestrians scattering and seven to the hospital.

Scene of Horror in Valletta

Witnesses described the scene as one of sheer panic. The incident occurred around noon, just as the lunchtime crowd was beginning to fill the streets. “I was walking out of the Marks & Spencer when I heard the commotion,” said a shaken Maria Grech, a local resident. “I turned around and saw the car speeding towards us. People were running in all directions.”

The driver, a 32-year-old man from Birkirkara, lost control of his vehicle near the historic Auberge de Provence. The car careered onto the pavement, striking several pedestrians before coming to a halt against a shop window. Emergency services rushed to the scene, treating the injured before transporting them to Mater Dei Hospital.

Investigation Launched

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, with early reports suggesting it may have been an accident rather than an act of malice. “We are treating this as a road traffic incident at this stage,” said a police spokesperson. “However, all possibilities are being explored.”

The driver was arrested at the scene and is currently being held for questioning. His vehicle has been impounded for further examination.

Local businesses have offered their support to the victims and their families. “We’re all in shock here,” said a spokesperson for the Valletta Local Council. “We’re doing everything we can to assist the police with their investigation and to support those affected.”

In the wake of the incident, calls have been made for increased safety measures in the city center. “We need to ensure that our streets are safe for everyone,” said Dr. Justyne Caruana, Minister for Gozo and Local Government. “We will be reviewing our safety measures and considering what more can be done to prevent such incidents in the future.”
