Alex Borg Proposes Specialist Anti-Drug Squad for Gozo

Alex Borg’s New Push: A Specialist Anti-Drug Squad for Gozo

Imagine, if you will, the quiet streets of Victoria, Gozo’s capital, suddenly echoing with the hum of a police operation. Not the usual bustle, but a targeted, specialist force, dedicated to one mission: ridding the sister island of its drug menace. This is the vision of Alex Borg, veteran Nationalist Party MP and long-time advocate for Gozo’s unique needs.

The Drug Challenge Facing Gozo

Gozo, with its idyllic landscapes and tight-knit communities, might seem an unlikely hotspot for drug-related crime. Yet, the island faces its own challenges. According to the Malta Police Force, drug seizures in Gozo have been on the rise, with cannabis and synthetic drugs being the most common. The island’s smaller size and close-knit communities can make drug-related issues feel more pronounced and pressing.

Alex Borg, representing the Gozo constituency, is all too aware of these issues. “Gozo deserves a strong response to this challenge,” he says. “Our island is not immune to the problems faced by the rest of Malta, and we need a tailored solution.”

Borg’s Proposal: A Specialist Squad

Borg’s proposal is straightforward yet innovative: a specialist anti-drug squad, based in Gozo, with a deep understanding of the island’s unique dynamics. This squad would operate independently from the main Malta Police Force, allowing for a more targeted and responsive approach.

“We need officers who know the island like the back of their hand,” Borg explains. “Who understand the local culture, speak the local dialect, and can build trust within our communities. They should be able to react swiftly to intelligence, and have the resources to conduct complex investigations.”

The squad, Borg envisions, would be equipped with the latest technology, from drones for surveillance to advanced forensic tools. It would also work closely with local councils, schools, and community organizations to educate and prevent drug use.

A Step Towards Decentralization?

Borg’s proposal is not just about tackling drugs; it’s also about decentralization. Gozo, despite being part of Malta, often feels overlooked and under-resourced. A specialist squad based in Gozo could be a step towards changing that.

“This is about more than just law enforcement,” Borg says. “It’s about giving Gozo the tools it needs to tackle its own challenges, to be self-reliant. It’s about showing our island that it matters, that its needs are being heard.”

Borg’s proposal has been met with both support and skepticism. Some welcome the focus on Gozo’s unique needs, while others question the feasibility and cost of such a squad. But one thing is clear: the debate has sparked a much-needed conversation about Gozo’s place in Malta’s criminal justice system.

As for Borg, he remains undeterred. “We can’t afford to wait,” he says. “Gozo deserves a future free from the scourge of drugs. And I’m committed to making that a reality.”
