Alex Borg Proposes Specialist Police Squad for Gozo’s Drug War
Borg’s Blueprint: A Specialist Police Squad for Gozo’s Drug Battle
Imagine this: a quiet Gozitan village, the scent of jasmine heavy in the evening air, and the distant hum of a fishing boat returning to Mgarr Harbour. Suddenly, the tranquility is shattered by a late-night raid. A specialist police squad, clad in black, descends on a suspected drug den, armed with intelligence and a mission to clean up the streets. This is the vision Alex Borg, Gozo’s MP, has for the sister island, and it’s closer to reality than you might think.
The Drug Dilemma: Gozo’s Hidden Battle
Gozo, with its idyllic landscapes and tight-knit communities, is often perceived as a haven from Malta’s urban woes. However, it’s not immune to the scourge of drugs. While the problem may not be as visible or widespread as in Malta, it’s a real and growing concern. Borg, who has been vocal about this issue, believes that a tailored approach is needed to tackle it effectively.
“Gozo has its unique challenges,” Borg says, “We need a solution that understands and addresses our specific needs.”
Borg’s Proposal: A Specialist Anti-Drug Squad
Borg’s proposal is straightforward: create a specialist anti-drug squad based in Gozo. This squad would be composed of local officers who understand the island’s geography, culture, and community dynamics. They would be equipped with the latest tools and intelligence to disrupt drug trafficking and usage.
“We have the resources and the will,” Borg asserts, “What we need is the right strategy and the right team.”
The squad would operate independently but collaborate closely with the Malta Police Force. It would focus on intelligence-led operations, community engagement, and targeted enforcement. Borg envisions the squad operating out of a dedicated base in Victoria, the heart of Gozo.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Support
Borg’s proposal faces challenges, not least the need for additional resources and political will. However, he’s optimistic. “We’ve seen similar initiatives work in other regions,” he says, “And I believe Gozo deserves no less.”
Support for the proposal is growing. Local councils, community leaders, and even some opposition politicians have voiced their support. The public, too, seems eager for a solution. A recent survey by Hot Malta showed that 78% of Gozitans back the proposal.
“We’re not asking for the moon,” Borg says, “We’re asking for a chance to make our island safer and cleaner. And I believe we can do it.”
