Borg Proposes Specialist Anti-Drug Squad for Gozo
Borg’s Blueprint: A Specialist Police Squad for Gozo’s Drug Woes
Imagine this: a quiet evening in the heart of Victoria, Gozo’s capital. The scent of fresh bread wafts from the bakery, children’s laughter echoes from the nearby playground. Suddenly, a commotion breaks the peace. A drug-related incident, another one. This is the reality facing Gozo today, and Alex Borg, the island’s MP, has had enough.
Borg has proposed the creation of a specialist police anti-drug squad, dedicated solely to tackling the growing drug problem in Gozo. The squad, if approved, will operate from the Gozitan police headquarters in Victoria, right at the heart of the island’s capital.
Understanding Gozo’s Drug Challenge
Gozo, Malta’s sister island, has long been known for its tranquility and rural charm. Yet, it’s not immune to the scourge of drugs. The island’s proximity to mainland Malta, combined with its relative isolation, has made it a transit point for drug trafficking. Local consumption, too, is a growing concern. According to Borg, the situation has reached a tipping point.
“We’re seeing an increase in drug-related incidents and arrests,” Borg says, “But the current resources are stretched thin. We need a dedicated team to turn the tide.”
Borg’s Proposal: A Squad for Gozo
Borg’s proposal is straightforward: establish a specialist anti-drug squad within the Gozitan police force. The squad, comprising around 10 officers, will be trained and equipped to handle drug-related cases exclusively. They will operate independently, reporting directly to the police commissioner, ensuring their focus remains undiluted.
“This isn’t about shifting blame or pointing fingers,” Borg asserts, “It’s about giving our police the tools they need to protect our community.”
The squad will have its work cut out. From busting drug dens in the narrow streets of Rabat to intercepting trafficking at the Gozo Channel, their role will be complex. But Borg is confident that a targeted approach will yield results.
: Hope on the Horizon
Borg’s proposal has sparked hope among Gozitan residents. “We’ve had enough of drugs spoiling our peaceful island,” says Maria, a Victoria resident. “If this squad can make a difference, it’s worth a try.”
The proposal now awaits government approval. If given the green light, the squad could be operational within months. Until then, Borg urges patience and unity. “This is about Gozo, about our future. Let’s stand together and demand a safer island.”
