Borg Proposes Specialist Anti-Drug Squad for Gozo

Borg’s Blueprint: A Drug-Fighting Force for Gozo

Imagine this: a quiet evening in the heart of Victoria, Gozo’s capital. The scent of fresh bread wafts from the bakery, children’s laughter echoes from the playground, and the ancient Citadel stands sentinel. Suddenly, a car screeches to a halt. Out step two officers, not in the familiar blue of the Malta Police, but in a new, distinctive uniform. They’re part of a new specialist anti-drug squad, a proposal that’s been stirring up conversation across the island.

The Proposal: A Squad Tailored for Gozo

Alex Borg, the Opposition’s spokesperson for Gozo, has proposed the creation of a specialist police anti-drug squad dedicated to the sister island. The squad, he envisions, would be equipped to tackle the unique challenges posed by Gozo’s geography and community. “Gozo’s isolation can sometimes make it a target for drug trafficking,” Borg explains, “We need a force that understands our island, its people, and its peculiarities.”

A New Force for an Old Battle

Drug abuse has long been a thorn in Gozo’s side. From the quiet streets of Xewkija to the bustling markets of Victoria, the scourge of drugs has left its mark. Borg’s proposal isn’t just about adding numbers to the police force; it’s about creating a unit that’s agile, informed, and invested in Gozo’s future. “We need officers who know the back roads, who speak the local dialect, who understand the culture,” Borg insists.

But creating such a squad isn’t without its challenges. Funding, training, and integration with the existing force are all hurdles that need to be overcome. Yet, Borg remains undeterred. “We’re not asking for the moon,” he says, “We’re asking for a force that truly serves and protects Gozo.”

As the sun sets over the Citadel, casting a warm glow over Victoria, the question remains: will Gozo see a new dawn in its fight against drugs? . But one thing’s for sure, the conversation has started, and it’s one that’s set to shape the future of policing in Gozo.
