Fort Chambray: Gozo’s Next National Park?

Fort Chambray: A New Dawn for Gozo’s Green Spaces?

Imagine this: the sun dipping below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the rugged scene of Gozo. The silhouette of Fort Chambray stands tall, not just as a historic landmark, but as the gateway to Malta’s fifth national park. This isn’t a scene from a dream, but a vision proposed by Momentum, a local NGO, that’s got the island buzzing.

From Fort to Park: A Green Transformation

Momentum has proposed transforming the historic Fort Chambray into Gozo’s newest national park. The fort, currently underutilized, would be the heart of this green space, surrounded by lush landscapes, walking trails, and cycling paths. The proposal is part of a broader vision to enhance Gozo’s natural beauty and boost sustainable tourism.

But why Fort Chambray? The location is strategic, says Dr. Joseph Caruana, Momentum’s President. “It’s centrally located, with easy access from Victoria and other parts of the island. Plus, it’s got a rich history that we can preserve and share with visitors.”

Preserving History, Embracing Nature

The proposal isn’t just about creating a new park. It’s about balancing nature and history. Fort Chambray, built by the Order of St. John in the 18th century, is a testament to Gozo’s past. The plan is to restore and repurpose the fort, turning it into an eco-museum and visitor center.

But what about the environmental impact? Momentum assures that the park will be designed with sustainability in mind. “We’re looking at native plant species, water management systems, and eco-friendly infrastructure,” explains Caruana. The park would also serve as a carbon sink, helping Gozo meet its climate goals.

What’s Next? The Road to Reality

The proposal is still in its early stages, but Momentum is gaining traction. They’ve held public consultations, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Now, they’re working with the Ministry for Gozo and other stakeholders to turn this vision into reality.

But it won’t be easy. There are logistical challenges, funding hurdles, and of course, the ever-present debate about development versus conservation. But Momentum is undeterred. “We believe in Gozo’s potential,” says Caruana. “And we believe that this park can be a breakthrough for the island’s future.”
