Fort Chambray: Gozo’s Next National Park?
Fort Chambray: A New Dawn for Gozo’s Natural Beauty?
Imagine strolling through a lush, untouched scene, the scent of wild herbs filling the air, and the only sound the rustling of leaves and the distant hum of traditional Gozitan boats. This could soon be a reality as Momentum, a local environmental NGO, proposes transforming Fort Chambray into Gozo’s newest national park.
Tucked away in the heart of Gozo, Fort Chambray stands as a silent sentinel, its historic walls echoing tales of bygone eras. But could this 18th-century fortress and its surrounding scene be on the cusp of a new chapter, one that sees it protected and preserved for generations to come?
From Fort to Park: A Vision for the Future
Momentum’s proposal, submitted to the Planning Authority, envisions Fort Chambray and its surrounding 15 hectares as a protected natural area. The plan aims to restore the fort’s historic buildings, create educational and cultural spaces, and develop walking trails that showcase Gozo’s unique flora and fauna.
“We want to create a space where Gozitans and visitors alike can connect with nature, learn about our heritage, and enjoy a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle,” explains Dr. Andrew Borg, Momentum’s director.
Local Support and Practical Considerations
Momentum’s proposal has garnered significant local support, with residents and environmental groups rallying behind the initiative. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive response,” Borg says. “People are eager to see Fort Chambray and its surroundings protected and put to good use.”
But turning vision into reality requires careful planning and practical considerations. The proposal includes provisions for parking, accessibility, and visitor management, ensuring the new national park can be enjoyed responsibly.
Momentum is working closely with local authorities and stakeholders to ensure the project aligns with Gozo’s strategic plan and supports the island’s sustainable tourism goals.
Fort Chambray: A Beacon of Conservation
If approved, Fort Chambray would join a growing list of protected areas in Malta and Gozo, including the Simar Nature Reserve and the Mgarr ix-Xini Bay. But it would also stand out, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
“We believe Fort Chambray has the potential to become a flagship project for conservation and sustainable development in Gozo,” Borg says. “It’s a chance to protect a unique scene, celebrate our heritage, and create a space that enriches the lives of Gozitans and visitors alike.”
As the Planning Authority reviews Momentum’s proposal, one thing is clear: the future of Fort Chambray is a topic that has captured the imagination of Gozitans and sparked a conversation about the island’s natural and cultural heritage.
So, will Fort Chambray become Gozo’s newest national park? . But one thing is certain: the momentum is building.
