Fort Chambray: Malta’s Next National Park?
Imagine strolling through a lush, untouched scene, the Mediterranean Sea shimmering in the distance, and knowing you’re in one of Malta’s newest national parks. This could soon be a reality, as Momentum Malta has proposed transforming Fort Chambray in Gozo into the island’s third national park.
Fort Chambray: A Hidden Gem Unveiled
Nestled in the heart of Gozo, Fort Chambray has long been a hidden gem, its rich history and stunning views often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours. This 18th-century fort, built by the Knights of St. John, sits on a hill overlooking the picturesque Xemxija Bay. Despite its potential, the area has remained largely undeveloped, making it an ideal candidate for Malta’s latest national park.
Momentum’s Vision: A Green Oasis
Momentum Malta, a leading local real estate developer, has proposed transforming Fort Chambray into a national park that showcases Gozo’s unique biodiversity and cultural heritage. The project, dubbed ‘Fort Chambray National Park’, aims to create a green oasis that preserves the area’s natural beauty while offering visitors a unique experience.
“We envision Fort Chambray National Park as a space where nature, history, and culture converge,” says Joseph Portelli, CEO of Momentum Malta. “We want to create a place that’s not just a tourist attraction, but a symbol of Gozo’s commitment to sustainability and preservation.”
What’s in Store for Fort Chambray?
Momentum’s plans for Fort Chambray National Park include:
- Restoration of the fort’s historic structures to house an interpretive centre and café.
- Development of walking and cycling trails that connect the park to nearby villages and beaches.
- Creation of a native plant nursery to help restore and maintain the park’s ecosystems.
- Installation of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, to power park facilities.
the project promises to create jobs and boost Gozo’s tourism industry. “Fort Chambray National Park could attract thousands of visitors each year, providing a significant boost to Gozo’s economy,” says Minister for Gozo Justyne Caruana.
Next Steps: Public Consultation and Planning
Momentum Malta is currently in the early stages of the project, with public consultation set to begin later this year. The developer will work closely with local authorities, environmental experts, and the public to refine the project’s details and ensure it meets the needs and expectations of the community.
“We want Fort Chambray National Park to be a labour of love, a project that reflects the dreams and aspirations of Gozitans,” says Portelli. “That’s why we’re committed to involving the public every step of the way.”
If all goes according to plan, construction on Fort Chambray National Park could begin as early as 2023, with the park set to open to the public a few years later.
