Maldives rescue diver dies in search for missing Italians
Silent Tributes in Sliema: Maltese Diver’s Heroic End
In the quiet hours of the morning, as the sun began to paint the Sliema promenade with its golden hues, a somber gathering stood in respect. They were there for one reason: to pay their respects to a man who had given his life in the pursuit of saving others. The man was Malte Zečević, a 44-year-old rescue diver from Malta, who lost his life in the Indian Ocean while searching for two missing Italian tourists.
From the Med to the Maldives: Malta’s Diving Legacy
Malta’s diving community is a tight-knit one, forged in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. It’s no surprise that when the call for help came from the Maldives, Malta’s divers were among the first to answer. Malte, a seasoned diver with over two decades of experience, was part of this response. He was no stranger to dangerous rescues, having participated in numerous operations around Malta’s coasts.
Malte’s journey from the Maltese Islands to the Maldives was a testament to the global reach of Malta’s diving community. From the bustling streets of Valletta to the remote atolls of the Indian Ocean, Malta’s divers are known for their skill, bravery, and commitment to saving lives.
Searching for Answers in the Indian Ocean
The search for the missing Italians, Emanuela Sanna and Matteo Capuzzo, began on August 15. The couple had gone missing while diving near the Maldives’ Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. Malte and his team were deployed to assist in the search, using their expertise to scour the ocean floor for any sign of the missing divers.
Days turned into weeks, and the search continued, despite harsh weather conditions and the challenges of diving in the deep, remote waters of the Indian Ocean. On September 5, Malte’s body was found, some 200 meters from the last known position of the missing Italians. He had been searching for them, even in the face of his own grave danger.
Homecoming and Tributes
Malte’s body was repatriated to Malta, where he was laid to rest in a ceremony attended by hundreds of mourners. Among them were fellow divers, friends, and family, all paying their respects to a man who had given his life in the service of others.
Tributes poured in from across Malta and beyond. The Prime Minister, Robert Abela, paid tribute to Malte, describing him as a “hero who gave his life in the service of others.” The Minister for Tourism, Clayton Bartolo, also paid tribute, highlighting Malte’s bravery and the importance of Malta’s diving community in global rescue efforts.
In Sliema, a simple plaque was placed on the promenade, a silent testament to Malte’s bravery. It reads: “In memory of Malte Zečević, a true hero. Rest in peace.”
