Malta Boatmen Challenge Unregistered Group’s Regulatory Claims
Uncharted Waters: Boatmen Challenge Unregistered Group’s Regulatory Claims
Imagine the bustling Grand Harbour, Malta’s maritime heart, where traditional dghajsas and modern yachts coexist. Now, picture a group, unregistered and uninvited, attempting to steer this maritime symphony. This is the reality facing Malta’s boatmen, who claim an unregistered entity is acting as the sector’s regulator.
Who’s at the Helm?
The unregistered group, calling itself ‘Malta Maritime Alliance’ (MMA), has been making waves, issuing guidelines and even fining boat operators. However, their lack of registration with the Malta Registry of Companies and no clear legal basis for their actions has raised eyebrows and hackles among boatmen.
“We’re not against regulation,” says Joe Xuereb, a third-generation boatman from the historic Three Cities. “But it should come from the authorities, not some self-appointed group. We’re licensed by Transport Malta, not MMA.”
MMA: A Voice or a Vessel?
MMA claims to represent boat operators’ interests, citing a need for self-regulation. They’ve set standards, imposed fines, and even threatened to blacklist operators who don’t comply. But boatmen like Xuereb question MMA’s legitimacy and methods.
“They’re not elected, not accountable,” Xuereb argues. “How can they fine us, threaten us, when they’re not even registered? It’s like a pirate ship trying to control the whole harbour!”
Reached for comment, MMA spokesperson refused to disclose their registration status, stating, “Our focus is on improving safety and standards, not administrative details.”
Ripples Reach Transport Malta
The controversy has reached Transport Malta, the official regulator. “We’re aware of the situation,” a spokesperson confirmed. “We’re looking into it. Until then, boat operators should follow our regulations, not those imposed by unregistered entities.”
Meanwhile, boatmen like Xuereb are left navigating uncertain waters. “We just want clarity,” he says. “Who’s really in charge here? The authorities or this unregistered group?”
As the debate continues, one thing is clear: Malta’s maritime sector is in uncharted waters, and boatmen are ready to raise anchor and steer their own course.
