Malta’s Catholic Community Welcomes Three New Priests
Three New Priests Bring Hope to Malta’s Catholic Faith
Under the soaring arches of St. John’s Co-Cathedral, a sense of renewal filled the air as three new priests were ordained in Valletta. The ceremony, a beacon of hope amidst challenging times, marked a significant moment for Malta’s Catholic community.
Ordination Amidst Uncertainty
The ordination of Rev. Dr. Joseph Azzopardi, Rev. Dr. Mario Attard, and Rev. Dr. Mark Attard came at a time when many churches have been grappling with reduced attendance and increased digital services due to the pandemic. Yet, the joyous occasion was a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community.
Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna, who presided over the ceremony, emphasized the importance of the new priests’ role in guiding the faithful through uncertain times. “They are called to be ministers of hope, especially in these challenging moments,” he said.
Local Roots and Global Visions
Each of the newly ordained priests brings a unique perspective to their ministry, shaped by their local roots and global experiences. Rev. Dr. Joseph Azzopardi, a native of Qrendi, has spent time studying and working in Rome. Rev. Dr. Mario Attard, from Birkirkara, has served in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State. Rev. Dr. Mark Attard, also from Birkirkara, has been involved in youth ministry and has a passion for evangelization.
“I feel a great sense of responsibility, but also a great sense of joy,” said Rev. Dr. Azzopardi. “I look forward to serving the people of Malta, especially the young, and helping them to grow in their faith.”
: A Future of Service
The new priests will now take up their roles in parishes across Malta. Rev. Dr. Azzopardi will serve in the parish of St. George in Rabat, while Rev. Dr. Attard will serve in the parish of St. Joseph in Birkirkara. Rev. Dr. Mark Attard will serve in the parish of St. Mary of Jesus in Żurrieq.
As they embark on their new roles, the priests express a shared commitment to serving their communities, especially the young. “I want to be a priest who is close to the people, who listens to them, and who helps them to grow in their faith,” said Rev. Dr. Mario Attard.
In the heart of Valletta, under the watchful eyes of the cathedral’s grand artworks, the ordination of these three new priests was more than just a ceremony. It was a message of hope, a reminder that even in uncertain times, the spirit of faith and community endures.
As the new priests begin their ministry, Malta’s Catholic community looks forward to the renewed energy and hope they bring, a beacon of light in challenging times.
