Momentum Proposes Fort Chambray as Gozo’s First National Park
Imagine this: the rugged cliffs of Gozo’s north coast, the sparkling Mediterranean stretching out before you, and not a single developer’s crane marring the view. This could soon be a reality, as the environmental NGO, Momentum, has proposed transforming Fort Chambray into Gozo’s first national park.
A Green Vision for Gozo’s Coastline
Momentum’s proposal, submitted to the Planning Authority, envisions Fort Chambray and its surrounding coastline as a protected area, teeming with native flora and fauna, and open for public enjoyment. The fort, a 17th-century landmark, would serve as the park’s hub, offering visitors a glimpse into Gozo’s rich history.
But why now? The push for this national park comes amidst growing concern over Gozo’s rapid development. “We’re seeing more and more concrete along our coastlines,” says Dr. Andrew Borg, Momentum’s director. “This proposal is about preserving what’s left of Gozo’s natural beauty and sharing it with locals and tourists alike.”
A Haven for Wildlife
Gozo’s coastline is home to many species, many of which are under threat. The proposed national park would provide a safe haven for these creatures, from the rare Maltese wall lizard to the migrating birds that stop off at the isle’s shores. “We want to create a space where nature can thrive,” says Borg. “And where people can connect with it.”
What’s in it for Gozitans?
But this isn’t just about preserving nature; it’s about enhancing Gozo’s appeal as a destination. A national park would draw eco-tourists, boost the local economy, and create jobs. Plus, it would give Gozitans a green space to call their own. “We want to see families picnicking here, kids learning about nature, and locals enjoying a walk along their coastline,” says Borg.
Of course, turning this vision into reality won’t be easy. There are ownership issues to navigate, infrastructure to consider, and, inevitably, opposition to overcome. But Momentum is undeterred. “We’ve seen what can be achieved when people come together for a cause,” says Borg. “We believe this is a cause worth fighting for.”
So, could Fort Chambray soon be Gozo’s answer to the UK’s Lake District or the US’s Yosemite? . But one thing’s for sure: the future of Gozo’s coast is up for grabs, and Momentum is making its play.
